Dexatrim
Dexatrim is an over-the-counter (OTC) dietary supplement designed to aid in weight loss. The product purports to "give you the power to lose weight, curb binges, and keep you in control of your diet." Presently available in capsule form, Dexatrim's product range includes Dexatrim Max Complex, Dexatrim Max Daytime Appetite Control, Dexatrim Natural Green Tea, and Dexatrim Natural Extra Energy.
Ingredients and Efficacy[edit]
Caffeine[edit]
The daily recommended dose of Dexatrim products contains caffeine ranging from 50–400 mg. Several studies indicate that caffeine can briefly stimulate the basal metabolic rate. Nevertheless, a 1992 double-blind placebo-controlled study concluded that a 200 mg daily dose of caffeine did not significantly promote weight loss compared to a placebo. Consuming caffeine might lead to side effects such as insomnia, anxiety, gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, headaches, and irregular heartbeats.
Green Tea Extract[edit]
Often used to enhance mental alertness and support weight loss, the efficacy of green tea extract for weight loss remains undetermined due to inadequate data. Aside from potential side effects associated with its caffeine content, green tea extract has been linked to liver issues, although such problems haven't been noted with green tea beverage consumption.
Asian (Panax) Ginseng Root Extract[edit]
Asian (Panax) Ginseng is utilized for numerous conditions, albeit without US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) endorsement. This includes its purported benefits for cognition, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, and weight loss. Current research does not generally support the health benefits associated with ginseng consumption. Using ginseng for under three months is deemed safe, with potential side effects such as headaches, insomnia, and gastrointestinal issues linked to extended usage.
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)[edit]
Produced by the adrenal glands and, in men, the testes, DHEA is a steroid hormone that can transform into male and female sex hormones within the body. It is used for various conditions—without US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approval—including aging, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and weight loss. However, data supporting DHEA's effectiveness in weight loss remains insufficient. Dexatrim Max's daily recommended dose contains between 100–200 mg of DHEA. Potential side effects include acne, hair loss, and high blood pressure. DHEA use carries specific precautions for various conditions, such as pregnancy and liver issues. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has banned DHEA use.
