Dental braces

From Food & Medicine Encyclopedia

Dental braces are devices used in orthodontics that align and straighten teeth and help position them with regard to a person's bite, while also aiming to improve dental health. Braces also fix gaps. They are often used to correct underbites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw.

Types of Braces[edit]

There are various types of braces available, including:

  • Metal wired braces: These are made from stainless steel. Sometimes, titanium is used. The traditional braces, which require ties to hold the wire in place, have been outdated by newer self-tying (or speed) brackets.
  • Clear braces: These serve as a cosmetic alternative to the metal wired braces. The brackets are ceramic or plastic and function in a similar manner to traditional braces.
  • Gold-plated stainless steel braces: Often employed for patients allergic to nickel (a basic and important component of stainless steel), but may also be chosen because some people simply prefer the look of gold over the traditional silver-colored braces.
  • Lingual braces: A cosmetic alternative in which custom-made braces are bonded to the back of the teeth making them externally invisible.
  • Titanium braces: These resemble stainless steel braces but are lighter and just as strong. People with allergies to the nickel in steel often choose titanium braces, but they are more expensive than stainless steel braces.

Procedure[edit]

The process for installing dental braces is a long one, typically lasting from one to three hours. The teeth are cleaned thoroughly, and photographic images and X-rays are taken. Measurements are taken of the mouth and teeth and models of the teeth are made for the perfect fit. The braces are then installed using a special adhesive, and finally, the installer will install the wire and secure it with elastic bands.

Risks and Complications[edit]

While dental braces can help improve a person's smile, they can also cause a number of health problems. These can include tooth decay, gum disease, decalcification of the teeth, plaque buildup, and discoloration of the teeth.
