XP - A rare inherited disorder characterized by extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet light, e. g. B. from the sun, and is characterized by a high risk of cancer. The signs and symptoms of XP usually appear in children as young as 2 years old. Affected children may develop severe blistering sunburn, freckling of the skin, dry skin, and skin color changes in sun-exposed areas after a short period of exposure to the sun. They can also develop eye problems and nervous system problems. People with XP have a very high risk of developing skin cancer, usually by age 10, and other types of cancer, including eye, brain, and, in smokers, lung cancer. XP is caused by mutations (changes) in certain genes involved in repairing damaged DNA. Also called xeroderma pigmentosum
