Vitamins are compounds that your body needs to augment and evolve commonly. There are 13 vitamins your body desires.

Vitamins are defined as essential constituents of the diet that are not synthetized by humans.  Some vitamins are synthesized to some extent, but in amounts that are usually inadequate to support health.  Most vitamins were discovered during the investigation of severe deficiencies such as scurvy (vitamin C), rickets (vitamin D), megaloblastic anemias (vitamin K and folate), pellagra (niacin) and beriberi (thiamine).  Most vitamins are not one specific molecule, but a group of related compounds that are capable of providing the necessarily essential molecular ingredient (thus nicotinic acid and nicotinamide for niacin and phytonadione and menadione for vitamin K).  The recommended daily amounts or recommended daily intakes of most vitamins have been established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine.  These recommendations provide guidance for standard dosing of vitamins in dietary supplements and multivitamin preparations.  Approximately one-third of adult Americans take multivitamins and a substantial number take specific vitamin supplements.

What is causing the epidemic of vitamin D deficiency?

According to the statistics, more than 40 percent of the entire population in the United States and similar number in many countries, are deficient in Vitamin D. While poor diet plays a role in this, the excess belly fat that most overweight or obese people have actually contributes to the deficiency of vitamin D as this sick and unhealthy belly fat takes up large quantities of vitamin D.

Balanced diet and vitamins

You can usually get all your vitamins from the nourishment you eat as long as you have a well balanced diet. Your body can furthermore make vitamins D and K to some extent. People who consume a vegetarian diet may need to take a vitamin B12 supplement.

Importance of vitamins

Each vitamin has exact biological role to play as some of these are co-enzymes in important biological pathways while others are needed for the cell metabolism. If you are deficient in certain vitamins, you may get many health problems related to the vitamin deficiency such as vitamin C deficiency leading to scurvy or anemia. Some vitamins may help avert or reduce health problems. Vitamin A is important for vision as deficiency can lead to night blindness.

Best way to get vitamins

The best way to get enough vitamins is to eat a balanced diet with a variety of nourishment. In some situations, you may need to take vitamin supplements. It's a good concept to inquire your health care provider first. High doses of some vitamins can cause difficulties.

Children and vitamins

The American Pediatrics Association does not support routine use of vitamins as supplements for children except in certain situations where a balanced diet may not be available.

Weight loss vitamins

Although some vitamins such as Vitamin B-12 are sometimes used to assist in weight loss, it is not routinely recommended unless there is evidence or reason to believe a person is deficient in these vitamins.
