Water use (pronunciation: /ˈwɔːtər juːz/) refers to the human utilization of water from various sources for different purposes.

Etymology

The term "water use" is derived from the Old English "wæter" and the Old French "user", which means to consume or deplete.

Types of Water Use

Water use can be categorized into several types:

  • Domestic Water Use: This refers to water used for indoor and outdoor household purposes such as drinking, food preparation, bathing, washing clothes and dishes, brushing teeth, watering the garden, and maintaining hygiene.
  • Agricultural Water Use: This involves the use of water for irrigation to grow crops and maintain livestock. It is the largest consumer of water globally.
  • Industrial Water Use': This includes water used for various industrial processes such as cooling, processing, washing, and diluting.
  • Recreational Water Use: This pertains to water used for recreational activities like swimming, boating, water parks, and fishing.
  • Environmental Water Use: This involves the use of water to maintain wetlands, forest habitats, river flow for fish, and other wildlife.
