Vesico-uterine pouch

Vesico-uterine pouch (pronunciation: ves-i-ko-yoo-tuh-reen pouch) is a medical term referring to the anatomical space located between the uterus and the urinary bladder in females.

Etymology

The term "Vesico-uterine pouch" is derived from the Latin words "vesica" meaning bladder, "uterus" meaning womb, and "pouch" referring to a small bag or sack.

Anatomy

The Vesico-uterine pouch is the anterior-most part of the peritoneal cavity in females. It is formed when the peritoneum, a serous membrane that forms the lining of the abdominal cavity, drapes over the uterus and the urinary bladder. This creates a space or "pouch" between these two organs.

Clinical Significance

The Vesico-uterine pouch is of clinical significance as it is often the lowest point in the pelvis when a woman is in a standing position. This makes it a common site for the accumulation of ascites (abnormal build-up of fluid in the abdomen), particularly in cases of ovarian cancer or endometriosis.
