Verumontanum

Verumontanum (pronunciation: ver-u-mon-ta-num) is a small, tuberculated eminence located in the prostatic part of the male urethra. It is a significant anatomical landmark in urological procedures.

Etymology

The term "verumontanum" is derived from the Latin words "veru" meaning spit, and "montanum" meaning mountain. This is due to the structure's resemblance to a small mountain peak.

Anatomy

The verumontanum is located in the posterior wall of the prostatic urethra. It is the site where the ejaculatory ducts and the prostatic utricle open. The prostatic utricle is a small, blind pouch located in the verumontanum that is considered to be the male equivalent of the female uterus and vagina.

Clinical Significance

The verumontanum is a crucial landmark in several urological procedures, including cystoscopy and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). It helps in identifying the location of the internal urethral orifice during cystoscopy. In TURP, the verumontanum serves as a boundary marker to prevent injury to the ejaculatory ducts.
