VCJD (pronounced: vee-see-jay-dee), also known as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, is a rare and fatal human neurodegenerative condition. It is classified as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), and is strongly linked to exposure to the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) agent.
Etymology
The term VCJD is an acronym derived from Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. The disease is named after Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt and Alfons Jakob, who first described the condition in the early 20th century.
