Vascular disease (pronunciation: /ˈvæskjʊlər diːˈziːz/) is a class of diseases of the blood vessels – the arteries and veins of the circulatory system of the body. It is a common form of cardiovascular disease, which is among the leading causes of death in developed countries.

Etymology

The term "vascular" comes from the Latin vasculum, meaning "small vessel". The term "disease" comes from the Old French desaise, meaning "lack of ease".

Types of Vascular Diseases

There are several types of vascular diseases, each with its own set of causes, symptoms, and treatments. Some of the most common types include:

  • Peripheral artery disease: A condition in which the arteries that supply blood to the limbs become narrowed or blocked.
  • Aneurysm: A bulge or "ballooning" in the wall of an artery.
  • Stroke: A condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced.
  • Varicose veins: Enlarged, swollen, and twisting veins, often appearing blue or dark purple.

Causes

Vascular diseases can be caused by conditions that damage your veins or arteries. These conditions include:

  • Atherosclerosis: A disease in which plaque builds up in your arteries.
  • High blood pressure: Also known as hypertension, it can cause damage to your blood vessels and heart.
  • Diabetes: High blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels over time.

Treatment

Treatment for vascular diseases depends on the specific disease, its stage, and the patient's overall health. Common treatments include lifestyle changes, medications, and in some cases, surgery.
