Urofollitropin

Urofollitropin (pronounced: yoo-roh-fol-li-TROH-pin) is a purified form of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) that is manufactured from the urine of postmenopausal women. It is used in fertility treatments to stimulate the growth of ovarian follicles in women who do not produce enough FSH naturally.

Etymology

The term "urofollitropin" is derived from the Greek words "ouron" (urine), "folliculus" (small sac), and "tropos" (turning). This refers to the fact that the hormone is extracted from urine and stimulates the growth of follicles in the ovaries.

Usage

Urofollitropin is used in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) procedures such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI). It is also used in the treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and other conditions that cause infertility due to low levels of FSH.
