Unsafe abortion (pronounced: un·safe a·bor·tion) is a term used to describe procedures for terminating an unwanted pregnancy either by persons lacking the necessary skills or in an environment lacking the minimal medical standards, or both.

The term "abortion" comes from the Latin word abortio, which means "to produce prematurely". The prefix "un-" in "unsafe" is from Old English un- meaning "not".
