Undecylenic acid (pronounced un-de-si-le-nic acid) is a fatty acid that is derived from castor oil. It is also known as 10-undecenoic acid and has the chemical formula C11H20O2.

Etymology

The term "undecylenic" is derived from the Latin word "undecim", which means eleven. This is in reference to the fact that undecylenic acid has 11 carbon atoms. The "-enoic" suffix indicates that it is an unsaturated fatty acid.

Uses

Undecylenic acid is primarily used in the treatment of fungal infections. It works by inhibiting the growth of the fungus. It is often used in over-the-counter medications for athlete's foot, ringworm, and other similar conditions.

In addition to its medicinal uses, undecylenic acid is also used in the manufacture of perfumes, plastics, and other industrial products.
