Tutsi

Tutsi (/tuːˈsiː/), also known as Watutsi, Batusi, Watusi, Watussi or Tussi, is an ethnic group inhabiting the African Great Lakes region. They are often referred to as the Rwandan Tutsi or the Burundian Tutsi depending on their country of origin.

Etymology

The origin of the term Tutsi is uncertain. Some theories suggest it may derive from the terms "turi abatutsi" meaning "we are Tutsi", or from "batutsi" meaning "the exalted ones".
