TrimSpa (pronounced: trim-spa) is a brand of weight-loss supplements that was once promoted by Anna Nicole Smith.

Pronunciation

  • IPA: /trɪmˈspɑː/

Etymology

The term "TrimSpa" is a portmanteau of the words "trim" and "spa". "Trim" is derived from the Middle English word "trymme", meaning "to prepare or make ready", and "spa" is a term of Belgian origin, referring to a place where medicinal treatments are given using water.

Description

TrimSpa, originally produced by Goen Technologies, was a dietary supplement designed to suppress appetite, increase metabolism, and provide energy. The product was reformulated after the ban of Ephedra, a once common ingredient in weight loss supplements, by the FDA in 2004. The new formula, known as TrimSpa X32, replaced Ephedra with Hoodia gordonii, a plant believed to have appetite-suppressing properties.

Controversy

TrimSpa has been the subject of controversy and legal action. In 2003, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged the makers of TrimSpa with making unsubstantiated claims about the product's weight loss benefits. The company settled the charges in 2004 by agreeing to stop making the claims and to pay a $1.5 million fine.
