Trilostane

Trilostane (pronounced: tri-los-tane) is a medication primarily used in the treatment of Cushing's syndrome and hyperadrenocorticism in dogs. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, which is involved in the production of several steroids including cortisol.

Etymology

The term "Trilostane" is derived from its chemical structure, which consists of three (tri) loster groups and a sterane backbone.

Usage

Trilostane is used to treat Cushing's syndrome in humans and hyperadrenocorticism in dogs. It is also used off-label in the treatment of Aldosterone-producing adenomas, a type of benign tumor that produces the hormone aldosterone.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Trilostane include nausea, vomiting, lethargy, and diarrhea. In rare cases, it can cause more serious side effects such as hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease), electrolyte imbalance, and hepatotoxicity (liver damage).
