Testicular Trauma

Testicular trauma (/tɛˈstɪkjʊlər ˈtrɔːmə/) refers to injuries or damage to the testicles, which are part of the male reproductive system.

Etymology

The term "testicular" is derived from the Latin word "testiculus," meaning "witness," and "trauma" comes from the Greek word "trauma," meaning "wound."

Definition

Testicular trauma is any physical injury to the testicles. The testicles are vulnerable to injury because they are located in the scrotum, a pouch of skin that hangs outside the body. Testicular trauma can result in severe pain, bruising, or swelling. In severe cases, it can also cause testicular rupture, a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.

Causes

Testicular trauma can be caused by several factors, including direct blows to the scrotum, sports injuries, accidents, or violent attacks. It can also occur as a result of medical procedures, such as vasectomy or testicular biopsy.

Symptoms

Symptoms of testicular trauma may include severe pain, swelling, bruising, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, shock. If a testicular rupture occurs, there may also be blood in the semen.

Treatment

Treatment for testicular trauma depends on the severity of the injury. Minor injuries may be treated with rest, ice, and over-the-counter pain medication. Severe injuries, such as a testicular rupture, require immediate medical attention and may require surgery.

Related Terms

  • Testicular torsion: A condition in which the spermatic cord, which provides blood flow to the testicle, twists and cuts off the blood supply.
