It stands alongside Hindi, English and Bengali as one of the few languages with primary official language status in more than one Indian state. Telugu is the primary language in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the union territory of Puducherry.

Etymology

The term Telugu, then, is a result of an anachronism - namely that the modern term comes from the ancient term Telunga, which itself is a derivation from Trilinga, as in Trilinga Desa, "the country of the three lingas". The linga is a representation of the Hindu deity Shiva.

Pronunciation

In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), the pronunciation of Telugu is /ˈtɛlʊɡuː/. The first syllable is pronounced like 'tell' in English, the second like 'oo' in 'look', and the final vowel is a long 'oo' sound as in 'boot'.
