Teleophthalmology

Teleophthalmology (pronunciation: tel-ee-op-thal-mol-uh-jee) is a branch of telemedicine that delivers eye care through digital medical equipment and telecommunications technology. Today, this method is employed by eye care specialists to screen a large number of patients in a short time for diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

Etymology

The term "teleophthalmology" is a combination of two words: "tele," which is derived from the Greek word "tēle," meaning "far off," and "ophthalmology," which comes from the Greek words "ophthalmos," meaning "eye," and "logia," meaning "study of." Thus, teleophthalmology essentially means "the study of eye care from a distance."

Applications

Teleophthalmology can be applied in several ways, including:

  • Screening: Teleophthalmology can be used to screen patients for eye diseases, especially in remote areas where access to eye care is limited.
  • Consultation: Specialists can provide advice to other healthcare professionals or directly to patients using telecommunication technology.
  • Education: Teleophthalmology can be used to educate healthcare professionals and patients about various eye conditions and treatments.

Related Terms

  • Telemedicine: The remote diagnosis and treatment of patients by means of telecommunications technology.
  • Ophthalmology: The branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the eye and visual system.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: A diabetes complication that affects eyes and can cause blindness.
