Tanzania
Tanzania
Tanzania (pronunciation: /ˌtænzəˈniːə/), officially known as the United Republic of Tanzania (Swahili: Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania), is a country in East Africa within the African Great Lakes region.
Etymology
The name "Tanzania" is a blend of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, the two states that unified to form the country. The name "Tanganyika" is derived from the Swahili words "tanga" (sail) and "nyika" (uninhabited plain or wilderness), creating the phrase "sail in the wilderness". Zanzibar's name is derived from "zanj", the Arabic word for "black", and "barr", which means "continent" or "shore".
