Subluxations

Subluxations (/sʌblʌkˈseɪʃənz/) are partial dislocations of a joint or organ. They occur when the two bones that form a joint become misaligned, but not to the extent that they completely lose contact with each other.

Etymology

The term "subluxation" is derived from the Latin words "sub" meaning "under" or "less than", and "luxare" meaning "to dislocate". Thus, a subluxation is a less than full dislocation.

Types of Subluxations

  • Spinal Subluxation: This occurs when one or more of the bones in the spine move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves.

  • Joint Subluxation: This refers to a partial dislocation of a joint, such as the shoulder, knee, or finger joints.
