Statutory Rape

Statutory rape (/ˈstætʃʊˌtɔːri reɪp/) is a term used in some legal jurisdictions to describe sexual activities where one participant is below the age required to legally consent to the behavior. Although it usually refers to adults engaging in sexual contact with minors under the age of consent, it can also refer to two underage individuals engaging in sexual activity with each other.

Etymology

The term "statutory rape" is derived from the legal concept of a "statute", which is a written law passed by a legislative body. The term "rape" is derived from the Latin "rapere", meaning to seize or take by force. In this context, "statutory rape" refers to a sexual act that is illegal solely because of the age of the participants, regardless of their consent.

Legal Definitions

Different jurisdictions use different terms to refer to statutory rape, and the definitions can vary widely. Some jurisdictions refer to it as "sexual assault", "corruption of a minor", "unlawful sexual activity with a minor", or other similar terms. Age of consent laws also vary widely globally, and even within countries.
