Stakeholders

Stakeholders (/ˈsteɪkˌhoʊldərz/) are individuals or groups that have an interest in any decision or activity of an organization. The term originates from the English words "stake" and "holder", implying that these entities hold a stake or share in the organization's outcomes.

Etymology

The term "stakeholder" was first used in an internal memorandum at the Stanford Research Institute in 1963. It refers to "those groups without whose support the organization would cease to exist."

Types of Stakeholders

Stakeholders can be broadly classified into two categories:

  • Internal Stakeholders: These are individuals or groups within the organization, such as employees, managers, and shareholders. They directly influence the organization's decisions and operations.
  • External Stakeholders: These are entities not directly tied to the organization but are affected by its decisions and actions. Examples include customers, suppliers, creditors, the government, and the public.

Role in Healthcare

In healthcare, stakeholders play a crucial role in shaping policies, managing resources, and influencing health outcomes. Key stakeholders in healthcare include:

  • Patients: The primary stakeholders, whose health and wellbeing are the central focus of all healthcare activities.
  • Healthcare Providers: These include doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals who deliver healthcare services.
  • Government Agencies: Entities that regulate healthcare practices and policies, such as the Department of Health and Human Services in the U.S.

Related Terms

  • Stakeholder Theory: A theory of organizational management and business ethics that addresses morals and values in managing an organization.
  • Stakeholder Analysis: An approach used in conflict resolution, project management, and business administration to identify and evaluate the interests of stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: The process by which an organization involves people who may be affected by the decisions it makes or can influence the implementation of its decisions.
