Solid waste (pronunciation: /ˈsɒlɪd weɪst/) refers to any garbage, refuse, sludge, and other discarded materials, including solid, liquid, semi-solid, or contained gaseous material resulting from industrial, commercial, mining, and agricultural operations, and from community activities.
Etymology
The term "solid waste" is derived from the English words "solid" and "waste". "Solid" (from Latin solidus) refers to a state of matter characterized by resistance to deformation and changes of volume. "Waste" (from Old English waste) refers to material that is not wanted; the unusable remains or byproducts of something.
