Etymology
The name 'Sierra Leone' originates from the Portuguese phrase 'Serra Lyoa', meaning 'Lion Mountain Range'. Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra named the country after the impressive mountains he saw while sailing the West African coast in 1462.
