Self-employment (/sɛlf ɪmˈplɔɪmənt/) refers to the state of working for oneself rather than an employer. Individuals who earn income directly from their own business, trade, or profession are self-employed.
Etymology
The term "self-employment" is derived from the combination of the words "self" and "employment". "Self" originates from the Old English word "self", which means "one's own person", and "employment" comes from the French word "emploi", which means "use, post, position".
