Secretomotor

Secretomotor (pronunciation: /ˌsiːkrɪtoʊˈmoʊtər/) refers to the nerves that stimulate the secretion of glands. The term is derived from the Latin words "secretio" meaning secretion and "motor" meaning mover.

Etymology

The term "Secretomotor" is a combination of two Latin words. The first part, "secretio", refers to the process of separating one thing from another, in this case, the secretion of a substance from a gland. The second part, "motor", refers to something that imparts motion. In this context, it refers to the nerves that stimulate the glands to secrete.

Function

Secretomotor nerves are responsible for stimulating the secretion of various glands in the body. These include the salivary glands, sweat glands, and glands in the gastrointestinal tract. The stimulation of these glands can be triggered by various factors, such as stress, temperature, and certain foods.

Related Terms

  • Parasympathetic nervous system: One of the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system, the other being the sympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic system is responsible for stimulation of "rest-and-digest" or "feed and breed" activities that occur when the body is at rest.
  • Sympathetic nervous system: The part of the autonomic nervous system that contains chiefly adrenergic fibers and tends to depress secretion, decrease the tone and contractility of smooth muscle, and increase heart rate.
  • Neurotransmitter: Chemicals that transmit signals from a neuron to a target cell across a synapse. Neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and norepinephrine can stimulate secretomotor nerves.
