Sanofi-Aventis

Sanofi-Aventis (pronunciation: /sæˈnoʊfi əˈvɛntɪs/) is a multinational pharmaceutical company that engages in the research, development, manufacture, and marketing of healthcare products. The company was formed as Sanofi-Aventis in 2004 by the merger of Aventis and Sanofi-Synthélabo, which were each the product of several previous mergers. It changed its name to Sanofi in May 2011.

Etymology

The name "Sanofi-Aventis" is derived from the names of the two merging companies. "Sanofi" comes from "Sanofi-Synthélabo", which in turn comes from "Sanofi" (itself the acronym of Société Anonyme Française de Normalisation de l'Industrie Pharmaceutique) and "Synthélabo". "Aventis" comes from the company's history as part of Hoechst AG, which merged with Roussel Uclaf and Rhône-Poulenc to form Aventis.
