Salt Lake City (pronunciation: /ˌsɔːlt leɪk ˈsɪti/), often shortened to SLC, is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Utah. With an estimated population of 199,335 in 2019, the city is the core of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which has a population of 1,222,540.
Etymology
The city was named for the Great Salt Lake nearby. The word "salt" comes from the Old English word "sealt", and "lake" from the Old English word "lacu". The "city" part of the name is derived from the Latin "civitas", meaning "citizenry" or "community".
History
Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young, Isaac Morley, George Washington Bradley and several other Mormon followers, who extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley.
Geography
Salt Lake City has a total area of 110.4 square miles, of which 109.1 square miles is land and 1.3 square miles, or 1.1499%, is water. The city is located in the northeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley surrounded by the Great Salt Lake to the northwest and the steep Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges on the eastern and western borders, respectively.
Climate
Salt Lake City has a hot-summer humid continental climate (Köppen Dfa), with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters.
Economy
Salt Lake City's economy is service-oriented. In the past, nearby steel, mining and railroad operations provided a strong source of income with Silver King Coalition Mines, Geneva Steel, Bingham Canyon Mine, and oil refineries.
Demographics
According to the 2010 Census, the racial makeup of Salt Lake City was 75.1% White, 2.6% African American, 1.2% Native American, 4.4% Asian, 2.0% Pacific Islander, 10.7% from other races, and 4.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.3% of the population.
Education
Salt Lake City is home to several institutions of higher education, including the University of Utah, Westminster College, and Salt Lake Community College.
Transportation
Salt Lake City's transportation is served by a light rail system known as TRAX, a commuter rail train known as FrontRunner, and a bus system operated by the Utah Transit Authority.
