Rizatriptan

Rizatriptan (pronounced rye-za-TRIP-tan) is a medication used to treat migraine headaches. It belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans.

Etymology

The name "Rizatriptan" is derived from its chemical structure. The "Riza" part of the name comes from the Greek word for "root", referring to the drug's origin in the root of the plant Rauwolfia serpentina. The "triptan" part of the name refers to the class of drugs it belongs to, which are known for their ability to constrict blood vessels in the brain and relieve migraine symptoms.

Usage

Rizatriptan is used to treat the symptoms of migraine headaches (severe, throbbing headaches that sometimes are accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound). It is not used to prevent migraines or to treat other types of headaches. Rizatriptan works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain, stopping pain signals from being sent to the brain, and blocking the release of certain natural substances that cause pain, nausea, and other symptoms of migraines.
