Rhytidectomy

Rhytidectomy (pronounced: rhy·ti·dec·to·my, /ˌrɪtɪˈdɛktəmi/), also known as a facelift, is a type of cosmetic surgery procedure used to give a more youthful appearance. It usually involves the removal of excess facial skin, with or without the tightening of underlying tissues, and the redraping of the skin on the patient's face and neck.

Etymology

The term "Rhytidectomy" comes from the Greek words "rhytis" meaning wrinkle and "ektome" meaning excision, thus translating to "wrinkle excision".

Procedure

Rhytidectomy is often combined with other procedures such as a neck lift or eyelid surgery to enhance the youthful appearance of the patient. The procedure can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The surgeon will make incisions in the hairline at the temples, continuing down around the ear and ending in the lower scalp. Fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, jowls and neck, and underlying tissue is repositioned. The skin is then redraped over the uplifted contours and excess skin is trimmed away.
