Residency (Medicine)

Residency (/rɛzɪdənsi/), in the field of medicine, refers to a stage of graduate medical education. It follows the completion of a degree in medicine and is led by a resident physician who is in the process of training to become a specialist in a specific field of medicine.

Etymology

The term "residency" originated from the system developed in the 19th century where the residents, the physicians in training, would reside in the hospitals, providing patient care.
