Queckenstedt's maneuver

Queckenstedt's maneuver (pronounced: Kwek-en-stedt's maneuver) is a medical procedure used to test the patency of the spinal canal in patients suspected of having spinal stenosis or other similar conditions.

Etymology

The maneuver is named after the German neurologist Hans Heinrich Georg Queckenstedt, who first described the procedure in 1916.

Procedure

During Queckenstedt's maneuver, the patient lies in a supine position. The physician then compresses the jugular veins on both sides of the neck, which increases the pressure in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This increase in pressure is then measured using a lumbar puncture. If the pressure increases rapidly and then decreases once the compression is released, it indicates that the spinal canal is patent. If the pressure does not change or changes very slowly, it suggests that there may be a blockage in the spinal canal.
