Quadrilateral

A Quadrilateral (pronounced: kwah-dri-lat-er-al) is a polygon with four edges (or sides) and four vertices or corners. Sometimes, it is called a tetragon or a 4-gon. The word is derived from the Latin words quadri, a variant of four, and latus, meaning "side".

Quadrilaterals are simple (not self-intersecting) or complex (self-intersecting), also called crossed. Simple quadrilaterals are either convex or concave.

Types of Quadrilaterals

There are several special types of quadrilaterals, each with their own unique properties. These include:

  • Square: A quadrilateral with all sides equal in length and all interior angles 90 degrees.
  • Rectangle: A quadrilateral with all interior angles 90 degrees.
  • Rhombus: A quadrilateral with all sides equal in length.
  • Parallelogram: A quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel and equal in length.
  • Trapezoid: A quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides.
  • Kite: A quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent sides equal in length.

Properties of Quadrilaterals

The sum of the interior angles in any quadrilateral is 360 degrees. This is a result of the quadrilateral being composed of two triangles, each of which has angle sums of 180 degrees.

In a cyclic quadrilateral, opposite angles add up to 180 degrees. A cyclic quadrilateral is one where all four vertices lie on a single circle.

Related Terms

  • Polygon: A plane figure that is described by a finite number of straight line segments connected to form a closed polygonal chain or polygonal circuit.
  • Vertex: The point where two or more lines meet.
  • Edge: A line segment joining two vertices.
  • Angle: The space between two intersecting lines or surfaces at or close to the point where they meet.
