Public transport (also known as public transportation, public transit, or mass transit) refers to a system of transport that is available for use by the general public, typically managed on a schedule and operated on established routes.

Etymology

The term "public transport" comes from the Latin publicus (public) and transportare (to transport). It first appeared in English in the 14th century.
