probability - measure of the probability of an event occurring in one group compared to the probability of the same event occurring in another group. In cancer research, odds ratios are most commonly used in case-control (retrospective) studies to determine whether exposure to a particular substance or other factor increases cancer risk. For example, researchers can study a group of people with cancer (cases) and another group without cancer (controls) to see how many people in each group were exposed to a particular substance or factor. They calculate the odds of exposure in both groups and then compare the odds. An odds ratio of one means that both groups had an equal chance of exposure and therefore exposure is unlikely to increase cancer risk. An odds ratio greater than one means exposure may increase cancer risk, and an odds ratio less than one means exposure may decrease cancer risk. Also called relative odds
