Posterior Tibial Artery

The Posterior Tibial Artery (Pronunciation: pos-teer-ee-or tib-ee-al ar-ter-ee) is one of the major arteries in the lower leg. It is a continuation of the Popliteal Artery and provides blood supply to the posterior compartment of the leg and plantar surface of the foot.

Etymology

The term "Posterior Tibial Artery" is derived from its anatomical position and the bone it is associated with. "Posterior" refers to its location at the back of the leg, while "Tibial" is derived from "Tibia", the larger and stronger of the two bones in the leg below the knee.

Anatomy

The Posterior Tibial Artery originates from the Popliteal Artery at the level of the lower border of the Popliteus Muscle. It travels downwards and medially, passing between the heads of the Gastrocnemius Muscle and along the medial side of the Tibia. It then continues into the foot, where it branches into the medial and lateral Plantar Arteries.

Function

The primary function of the Posterior Tibial Artery is to supply oxygenated blood to the posterior compartment of the leg and the plantar surface of the foot. It also gives off several branches that supply blood to the muscles and skin of the lower leg and foot.
