Psychiatry (pronounced /saɪˈkaɪətri/; from the Ancient Greek ψυχή psyche, "mind" and ιατρός iatros, "healer") is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behaviour, cognition, and perceptions.

Etymology

The term "psychiatry" was first coined by the German physician Johann Christian Reil in 1808. It is derived from the Greek words "psyche" meaning "soul" or "mind" and "iatros" meaning "healer" or "doctor". Thus, the term literally means "doctor of the soul" or "mind healer".
