Piles (Hemorrhoids)
Piles, also known as Hemorrhoids (pronounced: /ˈhɛmərɔɪdz/), are swollen veins in the lowest part of the rectum and anus. The term "Piles" is derived from the Latin word "Pila", meaning "ball", due to the round shape of the condition.
Causes
Piles can develop from increased pressure in the lower rectum due to:
- Straining during bowel movements
- Sitting for long periods of time, especially on the toilet
- Chronic diarrhea or constipation
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Anal intercourse
- Low-fiber diet
Symptoms
The symptoms of piles include:
- Painful or itchy swelling in the anus
- Pain during bowel movements
- Blood on your tissue after having a bowel movement
- A lump near your anus, which may be sensitive or painful
Treatment
Treatment for piles can often be done at home and may include:
- Over-the-counter topical treatments
- Cold compresses
- Stool softeners
- If more serious, surgery may be required
