Percent (%)

Percent (pronounced: /pərˈsɛnt/), from the Latin per centum meaning "by the hundred", is a unit of measurement used in many areas of study such as mathematics, finance, and statistics. It is often used to express a proportion in a whole as a fraction of 100.

Etymology

The term "percent" comes from the Latin per centum, which means "by the hundred". The symbol "%" was first used in the 15th century and evolved from the Italian term per cento.

Usage

In mathematics, a percent is a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. It is often used to compare quantities. For example, if 50 out of 100 students passed an exam, we can say that 50% of the students passed the exam.

In finance, percentages are used to express interest rates, growth rates, and changes in values. For example, if the value of a stock increases by 10%, it means that the value of the stock has increased by 10% of its original value.

In statistics, percentages are used to express proportions and probabilities. For example, if the probability of an event occurring is 0.2, we can say that the event has a 20% chance of occurring.
