Parent (/ˈpɛrənt/; from Latin parens, "to bring forth, give birth to") is a term that refers to a biological, adoptive, or de facto mother or father who cares for one or more children.

Definition

A Parent is a caregiver of the offspring in their own species. In humans, a parent is the caretaker of a child (where "child" refers to offspring, not necessarily age). A biological parent is a person whose gamete resulted in a child, a male through the sperm, and a female through the ovum. Biological parents are first-degree relatives and have 50% genetic meet. A parent can also be elaborated as an ancestor removed one generation.

Types of Parents

There are several types of parents, including:

  • Biological parent: A parent who has conceived (biological mother) or sired (biological father) the child.
  • Adoptive parent: A parent who has adopted a child, assuming all parental responsibilities.
  • Step-parent: A parent who is married to one's biological or adoptive parent.
  • Foster parent: A parent who cares for a child in the foster care system.
  • Surrogate parent: A woman who carries and gives birth to a child on behalf of another individual or couple.

Parenting Styles

There are several different parenting styles, including authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian. Each style has different effects on a child's development.
