Palatine Bone

The Palatine bone (pronounced: /ˈpælətaɪn/ bone) is a paired, irregular bone of the facial skeleton in many animal species, including humans. It is located between the maxilla and the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone.

Etymology

The term "palatine" originates from the Latin word "palatum" meaning "roof of the mouth", which is the location of the palatine bones.

Structure

The palatine bone is L-shaped, contributing to the floor and lateral wall of the nasal cavity, the roof of the mouth, and the floor of the orbit. It consists of two parts: the horizontal plate and the perpendicular plate. The horizontal plate forms the posterior part of the hard palate and the floor of the nasal cavity. The perpendicular plate forms part of the lateral wall of the nasal cavity and the orbital process contributes to a small part of the floor of the orbit.

Function

The palatine bone helps form the nasal cavity and the roof of the mouth. It is involved in the formation of the hard palate, the floor and lateral wall of the nasal cavity, and the floor of the orbit.
