Overeating (/ˌoʊvərˈiːtɪŋ/), also known as hyperphagia (/ˌhaɪpərˈfeɪdʒiə/), is the excessive consumption of food beyond an individual's basic caloric needs. The term is often used in the context of binge eating disorder and other eating disorders.

Etymology

The term "overeating" is derived from the English words "over," meaning excessively, and "eating," which refers to the act of consuming food. "Hyperphagia" is derived from the Greek words "hyper," meaning over or beyond, and "phagia," meaning eating.
