Orencia

Orencia (pronounced: /ɔːˈrɛnsiə/), also known by its generic name Abatacept, is a type of biologic therapy used in the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.

Etymology

The name "Orencia" is a brand name and does not have a known etymology. The generic name "Abatacept" is derived from the Latin roots 'ab-' meaning 'away from', 'ata-' meaning 'protein', and '-cept' meaning 'to take'. This refers to the drug's mechanism of action, which involves binding to specific proteins to modulate the immune response.

Usage

Orencia is used to reduce signs and symptoms of the aforementioned autoimmune diseases. It works by blocking the action of a certain type of immune cell called a T-cell. This helps to decrease the body's immune response, thereby reducing the inflammation and pain associated with these conditions.
