The process of obtaining a nurse licensure typically involves completing an accredited nursing program, passing a national licensing examination, such as the NCLEX-RN for registered nurses or the NCLEX-PN for practical nurses, and meeting any additional state requirements.
Types of Nurse Licensure
There are several types of nurse licensure, including:
- Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure: This is the most common type of nurse licensure. RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their families.
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensure: LPNs, also known as Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) in some states, provide basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses and doctors.
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Licensure: APRNs, which include nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives, have additional training and education that allows them to perform tasks that RNs are not licensed to do.
