Non-renewable resource

A Non-renewable resource (pronunciation: /ˌnɒn rɪˈnjuːəbəl rɪˈsɔːs/) is a type of resource that cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption.

Etymology

The term "non-renewable resource" is derived from the English words "non-", meaning not, "renewable", meaning able to be renewed, and "resource", meaning a source of supply or support.

Definition

Non-renewable resources are resources that have a finite supply. These include fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as minerals like gold, silver, and iron. Once these resources are used, they cannot be replenished within a human lifespan, making them non-renewable.

Related Terms

  • Fossil fuels: These are fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. They are considered non-renewable resources as they take millions of years to form and reserves are being depleted much faster than new ones are being formed.
  • Minerals: These are solid, naturally occurring inorganic substances. Many minerals, such as gold and silver, are non-renewable resources as they cannot be regenerated on a timescale that is relevant to humans.
  • Resource depletion: This is the consumption of a resource faster than it can be replenished. It is a significant issue with non-renewable resources.
  • Sustainable development: This is the organizing principle for meeting human development goals while simultaneously sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend. It is often discussed in the context of non-renewable resources.
