Non-inferiority trial - A study that tests whether a new treatment is no worse than an active treatment it is being compared to. Non-inferiority studies are sometimes done when placebo (an inactive treatment) cannot be used. These studies can show that a new treatment (such as a drug) is no worse than the active treatment being compared and that it is safer, easier to take, or causes fewer side effects
