Nigella sativa (pronunciation: ni-jel-uh sa-tee-vuh), also known as black cumin, black seed, and kalonji, is a flowering plant native to southwestern Asia and the Mediterranean. It belongs to the family Ranunculaceae and is known for its black seeds that have been used in traditional medicine for centuries.

Etymology

The term "Nigella" is derived from the Latin word "niger" which means "black", referring to the color of the seeds. "Sativa" is Latin for "cultivated", indicating that the plant has been grown for its beneficial properties.

Description

Nigella sativa is an annual flowering plant that grows to 20-30 cm tall. The plant has finely divided, linear leaves. The flowers are delicate, and usually colored pale blue and white, with five to ten petals. The fruit is a large and inflated capsule composed of three to seven united follicles, each containing numerous seeds.
