Nepali (IPA: /nɪˈpɔːli/), also known as Nepalese, is an Indo-Aryan language of the sub-branch of Eastern Pahari. It is the official language of Nepal and one of the 22 scheduled languages of India.
Etymology
The term "Nepali" is believed to be derived from the word "Nepa:" which refers to the Newar Kingdom, the kingdom of Kathmandu Valley, with the suffix "-li" meaning "belonging to". The name was used for the language of the Newar people, the inhabitants of Nepal, before the term "Nepali" was adopted in the 1930s.

In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), Nepali is pronounced as /nɪˈpɔːli/. The language has five vowels and 36 consonants.
