A Motorcycle (pronunciation: /ˈmoʊtərˌsaɪkəl/), also known as a motorbike, bike, or cycle, is a two- or three-wheeled motor vehicle.

Etymology

The term "motorcycle" was first used in the 19th century and comes from the words "motor" and "cycle". "Motor" comes from the Latin motorius meaning "mover", and "cycle" comes from the Greek kyklos meaning "circle" or "wheel".

Description

Motorcycle design varies greatly to suit a range of different purposes: long-distance travel, commuting, cruising, sport including racing, and off-road riding.

Types of Motorcycles

There are three major types of motorcycles: street, off-road, and dual purpose. Within these types, there are many sub-types of motorcycles for different purposes.

  • Street: These are designed for being ridden on the road and include: cruisers, sportbikes, scooters and mopeds.
  • Off-road: These are designed for off-road events and include: dirt bikes, trial bikes, and enduro bikes.
  • Dual purpose: These are designed to be ridden on both the road and off-road and include: dual-sports and adventure motorcycles.

Safety

Motorcycle safety is a serious concern for riders and those who share the road with motorcycles. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers a variety of courses for new and experienced riders.
