Metrizoic Acid

Metrizoic acid (/mɛˈtrɪzoʊɪk/ meh-TRIZ-oh-ik) is a type of contrast agent used in radiology to enhance the visibility of internal structures in X-ray imaging.

Etymology

The term "Metrizoic acid" is derived from the Greek words "metri" meaning "uterus" and "zoic" meaning "pertaining to life". This is in reference to its initial use in hysterosalpingography, a procedure that uses a contrast agent to visualize the uterus and fallopian tubes on X-ray.

Usage

Metrizoic acid is primarily used in diagnostic imaging to improve the contrast of structures or fluids within the body. It is often used in procedures such as angiography, urography, and cholangiography.
